Town hall meeting on alcohol sales to be held in Bethel

BETHEL -- A community meeting is set for Monday evening in Bethel on the topic of alcohol sales to help the community face the prospect of the first liquor store here in more than 40 years.

The town hall meeting has no official host but will start with a presentation by the Alcohol Beverage Control board. Attendees will be allowed to give public testimony. The city of Bethel announced the meeting on its website but is not hosting it, said city clerk Lori Strickler. Rather, the session is intended to allow a well-rounded discussion in a neutral space, she said.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center.

Bethel Native Corp. president and chief executive Ana Hoffman told the Bethel City Council last month the village corporation intends to seek a license to open a package store on the second floor of the now-shuttered Swanson's store in its new Kipusvik retail center.
