Bethel woman accused of injecting father with fatal dose of heroin

A 35-year-old Bethel woman stands accused of injecting her father with the heroin that killed him in an Anchorage apartment last fall, prosecutors said.

Shannon Cooke was indicted March 26 on charges of manslaughter and second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance, according to a release from the Anchorage District Attorney's office. Both charges are class A felonies.

On Sept. 29, 2014, in the account described by prosecutors, the Anchorage Police Department responded to a "medic call" at an apartment off LaTouche Street for Thomas Tungwenuk.

Tungwenuk was brought to an Anchorage hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The State Medical Examiner's Office determined Tungwenuk died of "acute combined effects of heroin and alcohol."

Prosecutors said police were originally told that Tungwenuk, Cooke's 56-year-old father, had injected the heroin himself and was found unresponsive by Cooke "30 to 45" minutes later.

But the DA's office said they now believe Cooke provided the heroin to her father and injected him with the drug.

Cooke was arrested Friday by the Bethel Police Department, with bail set at $20,000 plus a third party custodian.

If convicted, she could face up to 20 years in prison.
