State continues gradual reopening of Dalton Highway stretch closed by ice, floods

FAIRBANKS -- The state plans to continue its slow reopening of the Dalton Highway on Tuesday by allowing up to 200 trucks to travel the road.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner newspaper reports the Alaska Department of Transportation allowed about 100 approved supply trucks to make the drive Monday on the only overland connection to the North Slope.

The department allowed the first caravan of 30 trucks carrying critical supplies to make the drive north Sunday. The highway has been closed to traffic for much of April because of flooding and ice blockage from the nearby Sagavanirktok River.

The highway also was open Sunday to another 25 trucks that made the drive south.

A 15-mile stretch of the northern end of the road was impassible for a week because of unprecedented river overflow.
