Former Dimond hoops star Engel transferring to UAA

Former two-time Alaska Player of the Year Keiahnna Engel told the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame blog Friday that she is transferring from Division I Boise State and will play her final season of college basketball for UAA's Division II powerhouse.

Engel, a quick, 5-foot-7 guard who flourished at Dimond High, should fit in nicely in Seawolves coach Ryan McCarthy's high-tempo system, predicated on speed and pressure.

UAA last season was ranked No. 1 in the nation at one point and won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles before being upset by Point Loma in the first round of the NCAA West Regional. The Seawolves went 29-2.

"They were really successful last season and play the style I want to play,'' Engel told the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame.

Engel last season averaged 6.0 points per game and averaged 7.6 ppg as a redshirt junior.

Engel last season played in the Great Alaska Shootout with the Broncos, so she'll get to play in another Shootout in November.
