Anchorage police investigate fatal single-vehicle wreck

Anchorage police said Monday that a driver died Sunday morning after swerving off the road and striking a tree.

Police said they received a report just after 4:30 a.m. that a vehicle driving on East Northern Lights Boulevard had hit the tree near Wesleyan Drive in East Anchorage.

Officers from the Anchorage Police Department and the University of Alaska Anchorage located the wreck and found a man, the vehicle's only occupant, dead at the scene, police said.

The driver was identified by police as 20-year-old Kevin Gonzalez-Bermudez. His family has been told of his death, police said.

A preliminary investigation found Gonzalez-Bermudez's white Toyota RAV4 was headed west when it left the roadway and crossed a center median and opposing lanes before hitting a large tree, police said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
