Prep baseball, softball seasons get rolling

Barring more inclement weather, the lightning-quick Anchorage prep baseball and softball seasons are set to get underway Wednesday with games at Mulcahy Stadium, Bartlett Stadium and Albrecht Fields.

The prep softball season was supposed to start Monday, but varsity games were called off due to the spring snowfall. That means Wednesday's games will be the first. Games begin at 5:30 p.m. and include East vs. Service and Eagle River vs. South. At 7:30 p.m., Service will face Bartlett and Chugiak will take on East.

The prep baseball season begins Wednesday as well, with 6:30 p.m. games scheduled between South and Eagle River at Mulcahy Stadium and between Dimond and Bartlett at Bartlett's new on-campus stadium.

The first week of play in baseball is nonconference, with Cook Inlet Conference play starting May 2.

High school baseball and softball are outsourced sports, meaning they're run by local nonprofits rather than the Anchorage School District. The Alaska American Legion runs the high school baseball program, and the Anchorage Sports Association is in charge of softball.

Baseball's regular season runs through the third week of May, with the Cook Inlet Conference playoffs scheduled for May 21-23 and the state tournament set for June 4-6 at Mulcahy.

The prep softball season concludes May 23, with the CIC tournament scheduled to begin May 26. The state tournament is June 4-6 at the South Davis Park Complex in Fairbanks.
