Troopers seize Togiak-bound whiskey, charge Aleknagik man with smuggling

Acting on a tip, Alaska State Troopers detained an Aleknagik man attempting to smuggle 11 bottles of whiskey into Togiak at the village's airstrip Friday, they said.

In an online dispatch, troopers wrote that the whiskey bottles were in a box belonging to 31-year-old Jeremiah Kyakwok.

Kyakwok has two prior convictions for the importation of alcohol, which makes the latest charge a felony. He was taken to the Togiak holding facility, but will be moved to the Dillingham Corrections Center. Kyakwok is being held on $500 bail.

Togiak, a village about 67 miles west of Dillingham in Southwest Alaska, voted to ban the sale, importation and possession of alcohol in 1986.
