Retired Anchorage detective Glen Klinkhart will talk about his book, "Finding Bethany" -- which chronicles one of the most publicized local murders in recent years and touches on other aspects of police work in our town -- during the next meeting of the Alaska Prospectors Society at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at First United Methodist Church, 725 W. Ninth Ave. The public is invited, refreshments are served and the event is free, though donations are welcome. Also on April 28, at 5 p.m. at the UAA Campus Bookstore, translator Andrea Gregovich will talk about her work in modern Russian literature, focusing on the writing of Vladimir Kozlov. Kozlov has won several awards for his fiction and nonfiction. His latest, "USSR: Diary of a Perestroika Kid," is about growing up in a crumbling industrial town as the Soviet Union collapses.

The principal wind musicians of the Anchorage Symphony will present a "Stained Glass" concert of music for wind quintet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at First Presbyterian Church, 616 W. 10th Ave. Roxann Selland Berry, Sharman Piper, Karl Pasch, Heather Williams and Darrel Kincade will perform work by Jacques Ibert, Gyorgy Ligeti, Darius Milhaud and others. The event is free but donations will be accepted.

Literacy

Yup'ik spelling bee

Students from three school districts will face off in a contest to see who can spell the best in Central Yup'ik at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the Anchorage Native Cultural Charter School, 550 Bragaw St. Think you can tell the difference between tungulriayagaat (cross foxes) and tuntuvak (moose)? Find out. There'll be notepads and pencils available for those who want to test themselves. There will also be light refreshments.
