iCamp at Gladys Wood

We will be using iMac Desktops to create digital videos, commercials and music using a variety of software available both online (Web 2.0) and on the iMac. Campers will be able to learn how to create digital videos, digital images, original music and short videos and even create in Minecraft. All sessions will have time for Minecraft for those students who want create in Minecraft (no survivor mode).

The Yakking Spot

The Yakking Spot uses the Yak Academy foreign language curriculum to teach Spanish. Yak Academy has partnered with world language and early childhood education experts to design a program with maximum sensory and intellectual activities. Our daily lesson plans typically include play time, a lesson, active games, art projects, a short walk to the park, books and board games. All of this is completely done in Spanish. We have language goals while the children feel they are just playing. Our focus is on speaking and listening with an emphasis on practical communication as opposed to vocabulary memorization.

Crime Scene Investigation

Advanced Structures

This week-long session is designed for students who have some experience designing structures. Attendees will learn advanced concepts about structures, such as buckling and connection design, and will design a bridge using 3-D computer software. Bridges will be constructed using metal, wood and mechanical fasteners (screws and bolts). Bridges will be tested for strength and material efficiency.

Advanced Robotics

In this programming-focused week-long session, students are expected to have some experience in robotics and programming. Attendees will learn to build and program a simple robot using an Arduino Nano capable of accomplishing complex tasks. The robots will be programmed to navigate a maze and be controlled remotely using Android tablets or cell phones.

Age or grade level: 9th-12th grade; 6th-8th grade

Creative Coding

Students in this week-long session will learn how to write computer programs that manipulate graphics and sound, and how to create a computer game. Students will learn basic programming skills and learn how to draw graphics, animate images and digitally manipulate sound. These concepts will prepare students for other programming activities, such as programming robots, Arduinos or websites.

Wing Aerodynamics

This week-long academy will give students experience in fundamental aerodynamics and state-of-the-art design and prototyping of aircraft wings. Attendees will generate an airfoil using digital tools and fabricate a scaled aircraft prototype. Their model will be tested in a wind tunnel and flow will be using laser-induced fluorescence.

Alternative Energy

In this week-long academy, students will learn how energy is produced and consumed, with a focus on renewable sources. Attendees will create a mini power grid using a small photovoltaic array, wind turbine, battery bank and various electrical loads, which will be tested for effectiveness and efficiency.

Structure Destruction

In this week-long academy, students will learn how bridges, buildings and towers work. Attendees will design, analyze with computer software and construct a Basswood bridge, which will be subjected to destructive testing to determine the strength, stiffness and material efficiency.

Robotics

In this week-long introduction to robotics, students will design, build and program a robot to complete a task. Topics will include mechanical design, motors and actuators, manipulating objects, sensors and programming. Space Adventures Camp

Bricks 4 Kidz created an entire unit around space. Students will learn about real-life space exploration and build a new Lego model related to the NASA space program. Models include a satellite, a lunar module, a centrifuge and more. During this unit, students will learn some of the science behind launching things into orbit, and discuss what it is like to be an astronaut in space. Movie Making 101

Lights, cameras, Lego action. Use Lego bricks to tell your story, complete with music, special effects and all your favorite Lego mini-figure characters. In this unique and creative camp, students will plan, script, stage, shoot and produce their own mini-movie using stop-motion animation. Working as a team, students will use Lego components to build the set and props, then shoot their movie using a camera. When the movie is complete, campers will impress family with a screening party on the last day of camp. Don't miss your chance to be a movie producer.

radKIDS

The national leader in children's safety education course: bully prevention, internet safety, out and about safety, good, bad and unwanted touch, predator tricks including physical resistance strategies. Students work on "radKIDS plans" so that they are able to keep themselves safe in different situations. radkIDS has a free return to practice policy with any certified instructor until the age of 13. Pre-registration is required.
