Suspect in West Anchorage sexual assault, kidnapping arrested

The Anchorage Police Department arrested a 20-year-old man Thursday after he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman at gunpoint and kidnapped her and her two children from their West Anchorage driveway the day before.

Police say Dustin Arthur Badillo's crime spree continued Thursday. At 4:07 p.m., an Anchorage resident called police and reported a burglary in progress. The caller said he returned home and found a man, armed with a gun, inside his house near the intersection of West 15th Avenue and F Street. Police later identified the man as Badillo, according to Renee Oistad, police department spokesperson.

Badillo ran out of the house. The resident chased him until he was out of sight, Oistad said.

While police searched for Badillo, they received another tip about a suspicious man behind North Star Elementary School, about 1 mile away, Oistad said.

Police drove toward the school. Upon seeing their cars, Badillo ran. By 4:37 p.m., police had found Badillo near West 27th Avenue and Arctic Boulevard. An officer led him into the back of a police car. A few onlookers cheered, including Marilyn Rudolph, 60.

Rudolph said she lives near the mother and her children in West Anchorage. She described them as "just a lovely family." The family lives on a tiny dead end street on the 1000 block of West 22nd Avenue, Rudolph said.

"It's an old-fashioned, typical Alaska neighborhood," she said

Around 8 a.m. Wednesday, police said, Badillo was in that neighborhood. The woman and her children, whom police have not identified, were leaving their home. Badillo entered their garage armed with a gun, police said, and sexually assaulted the woman.

Then he forced the woman into her minivan along with her children. He had her drive to various banks and ATMs to withdraw money from her bank account, police said.

Three hours after the kidnapping, Badillo dropped the woman and her children off on Boniface Parkway, police said. The minivan was found in Mountain View on Wednesday night, Oistad said.

Oistad said Thursday that the public was instrumental in tracking down Badillo. Badillo had scrapes and scratches from climbing over fences and running through yards during the chase. Police were not injured, she said. She said police found a firearm in the area along with other evidence.

Police said Badillo was taken to the Anchorage Police Department, where he would be questioned by detectives.

On Wednesday, police had issued a warrant for Badillo's arrest. He was charged with three counts of kidnapping, one count of first-degree robbery and one count of sexual assault. After Thursday's events, Oistad said she expected Badillo would face additional charges.
