North Pole man allegedly trying to sell heroin accidentally texts trooper

Alaska State Troopers say a North Pole man wrote a text message offering to sell someone heroin and accidentally sent it to a drug investigator Tuesday.

Troopers identified the sender of the text message as 31-year-old Logan Martz. "Martz thought he was contacting someone else," said a troopers dispatch posted online.

Megan Peters, troopers spokeswoman, declined to comment on how Martz managed to send a text message to the wrong person. Did he already have the investigator's phone number or did a slip of the finger lead to a mistype?

"This information will have to come out through the court process," Peters wrote in an email.

At 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, the Fairbanks Statewide Drug Enforcement Unit launched an investigation into the incident. Martz was arrested at his home for second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance for the sale and distribution of heroin, troopers said.

Troopers also arrested Nicholas Axhelm, 25, at the home on an outstanding warrant.

Matthew Howell, 29, was arrested there as well, according to troopers. Howell showed up at the home while troopers were serving a search warrant. He had a "small amount of heroin" and was in violation of his conditions of release from a prior case, troopers said.

Howell was arrested for violating conditions of release and fourth-degree possession of a controlled substance.

"Lastly, large household appliances were recovered from Martz's residence which had been stolen from another residence in North Pole just a few days prior," troopers said.

Peters said the kitchen appliances were returned and the investigation was ongoing.

On Wednesday, Axhelm, Howell and Martz were all in custody at the Fairbanks Correctional Center.
