Scooter driver killed in Glenn Highway crash identified

The Anchorage Police Department Monday morning identified a motor scooter driver who died in a two-vehicle crash on the Glenn Highway Saturday evening.

Leroy Blix Jr., 66, was killed in the crash that occurred near Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro wrote in a release.

Around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Blix was driving a scooter outbound on the Glenn Highway. Blix was in the far right lane when the scooter he was driving and a red SUV driving in the same lane collided.

The crash occurred just before the "S curves" located at roughly Mile 10 of the Glenn Highway, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.

What caused the two vehicles to collide is still under investigation, Castro said.

"We just know that both of them were traveling in the far right lane," she said.

The crash shut down the highway's outbound lanes briefly Saturday evening.

The driver of the SUV stayed on scene after the crash and cooperated with police, the release says.

No charges had been filed Monday, Castro wrote.
