USSA honors Randall for work with kids

Anchorage's Kikkan Randall has collected plenty of medals for her prowess in cross-country skiing, and now she has an award that recognizes her efforts to empower young girls.

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association honored Randall with the Russell Wilder Award for contributions to youths. Randall is an ambassador for Fast and Female, an organization that began in 2005 as an effort to get more girls skiing.

Randall, a four-time Olympian and three-time World Cup sprint champion, was among several athletes, coaches and other contributors honored at last weekend's Chairman's Awards Dinner in Park City, Utah.

Also earning recognition was Jason Cork of North Pole, who shared the international cross-country coach of the year award with Matt Whitcomb of Massachusetts. Cork, a North Pole graduate who went on to ski for the UAF Nanooks, is the men's coach and Whitcomb in the women's coach for the U.S. Ski Team's cross-country squad.
