Anchorage jail inmate dies after reporting difficulty breathing

The Alaska Department of Corrections says a 26-year-old inmate who was being held at the Anchorage jail on a DUI charge died Thursday night.

In a release, corrections officials said medics responded to a report that Alexis Hathaway was having difficulty breathing at about 9:30 p.m.

Hathaway was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead about an hour later.

Hathaway had been booked at the Anchorage jail Wednesday morning on a felony DUI charge, corrections officials said.

Corrections spokesperson Sherrie Daigle said she did not have additional information.

Alaska State Troopers are investigating the death.

Hathaway arrived at the Anchorage jail after he was charged with drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident, according to documents filed in Anchorage Superior Court on Wednesday.
