7 records fall on epic day at Alaska state track championships

Cliches are almost necessary when talking about what happened at the state track and field championships Saturday at Dimond Alumni Field.

Start with the one that says records are made to be broken. Follow that up with the one about rewriting the record book. Then throw in the one that says it doesn't get any better than this.

Because it doesn't.

Seven state records were broken on the second day of the state championships, including two by Anchorage Christian wonder girl Tanner Ealum, a 5-foot-tall package of muscle and speed.

Add the two records broken Friday by distance runners Allie Ostrander of Kenai Central and Levi Thomet of Kodiak -- each of whom set another record Saturday -- and you wind up with new standards in more than 25 percent of the events contested. There's a combined 34 boys and girls events in high school track, and records were set in nine of them.

So forget the cliches and bring on the adjectives, which were as abundant as the records themselves. From the teenagers setting the records to the veteran coaches urging them on, the onslaught of records took everyone's breath away.

"It's insane," said ACS coach Jason Hofaker, whose teams swept the team championships in the Class 1-2-3A competition.

"It's super inspiring," said Thunder Mountain hurdler Naomi Welling, who broke the 21-year-old record in the girls 300-meter hurdles.

"It's awesome," said Alaska Running Academy coach Doug Herron, who watched Thomet break his 30-year-old record in the boys 1,600 meters.

"That's incredible," said Ealum, who destroyed the 33-year-old 200-meter record and the five-year-old 400-meter record.

"This is what you prepare for," she added. "This is what we came here to do."

For the record, here are Saturday's magnificent seven:

Ostrander capped a brilliant high school career by lowering her own record in the girls 1,600 by more than a second. She finished in 4 minutes, 48.31 seconds to erase her year-old record of 4:49.47. A three-time state cross-country champion, Ostrander on Friday broke her own record in the 3,200.

Thomet also finished his career with a flourish to lead the Kodiak boys to the Class 4A state title. A day after setting the 3,200 mark, the senior clocked a 4:12.17 to take down Herron's 1985 mark of 4:13. Thomet's fastest lap was his last one, which he completed in 62.1 seconds, according to Kodiak coach Marcus Dunbar.

Ealum, a junior who won three races Saturday, took the 200 in 24.73 seconds and the 400 in 54.86 seconds, plus she threatened the state record in the 100 by winning in 12.11. The girls' 100 record is the oldest in Alaska, a hand-held time of 11.8 seconds set by Bartlett's Starlett Jackson in 1981. When converted to a fully automatic time, Jackson's time is a 12.04.

Welling, another junior and triple winner Saturday, topped the 300 hurdles, 100 hurdles and the triple jump. She set the 300 hurdles record with a time of 44.27 seconds, bettering the 1994 record of 44.93.

Led by a ferocious anchor leg by Charles Sudduth, West Valley's 400-meter relay team ran 43.47 to shave .03 of a second off the 2006 mark set by East's boys. Prince Cooks, Joshua Cummings and Xavier Simon teamed up with Sudduth, who came tantalizingly close to breaking the 100-meter mark. He won in 10.91, just missing the 20-year-old record of 10.90.

In the first race of the day, the Soldotna girls set the tone by shattering the 3,200 relay record with a time of 9:27.39. The team of Daisy Nelson, Olivia Hutchings, Sadie Fox and Dani McCormick sliced nearly eight seconds off the 2004 record.

"It seems like every other comment over the intercom is 'A new state record has been set,' '' Walling said. "It's a competitive atmosphere and our season's so short, you get into an all-or-nothing mentality."

Ealum brought that mentality to all of her races. In the 400, she looked like a Porsche in a field of sedans, roaring to a lead of several meters on the first curve. With her form breaking down in the final few meters, she threw herself across the finish line and tumbled to the track. She won by more than six seconds.

"I crossed the line and, oh gosh, that pain," Ealum said. "The pain usually happens at the 50-meter mark but today I felt it at 100.

"Last week I ran 56.06 and I knew that was close to the state record. I knew I could not give it up at the finish line. I ended up tripping at the end, but I got the record."

About an hour later, Ealum was back in the starting blocks for the 200.

"My legs were already tired after the 400," she said. Yet she won by more than two seconds, leaning hard at the finish to ensure the record.

"I had a lot of power leans today. Running these kind of races, you don't want to finish and say, 'I could've pushed it harder, I could've had a state record.' "

So why all the records?

Dunbar, the Kodiak coach, said a couple of factors contributed -- a mild winter that allowed athletes to train through the winter, Anchorage's indoor dome that allows early season meets to be held as winter turns to spring, and even the Internet.

"They see other people's times online, and their perception of 'fast' changes," he said.

All of the records overshadowed other performances that would have gained more attention in an ordinary year.

The South High girls captured their first state championship in overwhelming fashion, claiming the Class 4A title with 76 points.

Katie Hines and Haley Hakala finished 1-2 in the 100 and 200, and they helped the Wolverines to wins in the 400 relay and 800 relay. Hines' times of 12.52 and 25.65 were good enough to top the Class 4A finals but they couldn't match what Ealum did, unchallenged, in the Class 1-2-3A races.

South finished with 76 points for a comfortable victory. Kenai Central won a tight battle for second place with 54 points, edging Dimond (52), Eagle River (50), Colony (49) and Soldotna (49).

The Class 4A boys race played out similarly, with Kodiak winning big with 83 points and Lathrop prevailing in the fight for second place with 63 points to hold off Bartlett (60), Dimond (59) and West Valley (57).

Anchorage Christian pulled off the first sweep of Class 1-2-3A team titles in school history.

The girls scored 95 points to surge past Homer (80 points), which won three of the four relay races, and Grace Christian (78 points), which had a double winner in Ashley Logan, who won Saturday's discus and Friday's shot put.

The boys racked up 119.5 points to overwhelm the rest of the field. Eielson was second with 72 points, and Seward claimed third place with 51, beating out Petersburg (48) and Homer (46).

ACS senior Michael Todd showed his versatility, and talent, by winning the Class 1-2-3A races in the 1,600, 800 and 400.

He ran a masterful 1,600, tucking in behind defending champion Kaleb Korta of Galena for the first three laps and turning the race into a sprint at 300 meters. He beat Korta by 2.5 seconds, winning in 4:21.9.

It was just the third time Todd, a sprinter a year ago, had raced 1,600 meters. He ran the final lap in 60 seconds flat, according to Hofaker.

"He's very efficient," the ACS coach said. "Last year we said, 'If we can get some conditioning in him, he could pull this off.' We haven't scratched the surface of where this kid can go."

Hofaker said Todd has been invited to join Liberty University's Division I track team as a walk-on. As for Ealum, the Lions get one more year to enjoy her talents.

"She's amazing," Hofaker said. "Just phenomenal. Her work ethic -- she runs everything hard. I've had to pull her out of races because I know she's gonna run everything hard."
