Running roundup: Johnston 4th in 24-hour slog; Red Shirt Lake results

Ultramarathoner David Johnston of Willow finished fourth last weekend in a 24-hour race in Pennsylvania, covering 136.7 miles in sweltering conditions at the Dawn to Dusk to Dawn Ultra.

Johnston's effort in a race where the temperature reached 90 degrees and humidity draped runners followed his series of ultramarathoning victories earlier this year.

In January, he won the Across the Years six-day race in Arizona, running 551 miles. Johnston, 45, also swept the running divisions in the Susitna 100-miler and Iditarod Trail Invitational 350-miler – only two weeks separated those races in February and March – for the second straight year, and owns race records in both events.

The winner of last weekend's race in Pennsylvania, Ian McIllvena of Quesnel, British Columbia, covered 155.8 miles.

Stavich, Pahkala win Red Shirt Lake Trail Run

Andrew Stavich and Jessica Pahkala earned the men's and women's victories, respectively, in the Red Shirt Lake Trail Run last weekend in the Valley.

Stavich clocked 39 minutes, 42.2 seconds for the six-mile course to top Andrew Nolan by 25 seconds.

Pahkala, the All-America who competes for UAA in cross country and track, topped women and finished sixth overall in 43:16.7. That gave her a cushion of 5:14 on runner-up Kristy Berington, an Iditarod musher.

The race near Willow drew 74 runners, who raced under sunny skies, and recharged after the race with watermelon and homemade soup.
