Vandal burns playground structure at Anchorage school

The Anchorage School District says a playground structure at an elementary school was vandalized.

A fire Sunday night caused tens of thousands of dollars damage to equipment at Taku Elementary School off the Old Seward Highway near east 72nd Avenue.

Superintendent Ed Graff says the vandalism is of extreme concern because of the damage and the risk of injury.

He says it hurts both the school and the neighborhood, which is encouraged to use the equipment over the summer.

The district will replace the play structure.

The district is again seeking participants for a camper host program in which recreational vehicle travelers are allowed to park at schools in exchange for providing a presence at the facilities.

Police are asking the public for tips regarding the Taku Elementary School damage.
