Troopers: Children set fire to Western Alaska school intentionally

Alaska State Troopers said two young children are responsible for setting fire to a Western Alaska school Monday.

In an online dispatch, troopers wrote that residents and local officials in Grayling responded to the fire almost immediately and extinguished the blaze, but not before it damaged an exterior wall, a steel door, and some windows. Estimates for that damage, along with minor smoke and water damage, totaled less than $20,000.

Troopers contacted a 6-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl who they said are "directly responsible for intentionally setting the fire."

Troopers said criminal charges will be referred to the Bethel Department of Juvenile Justice, and the state Office of Children's Services will be notified.
