Togiak teen drowns after inhaling gas

Alaska State Troopers said a Togiak teen drowned when he fell into a tidal creek after inhaling gas along its banks Tuesday morning.

In an online dispatch, troopers wrote that 14-year-old Reuben D. Pauk "was huffing gas on the creek bank in Togiak with several other juvenile males," at about 3:30 Tuesday morning when he fell into the Nasaurluq Creek.

The creek was swollen with an incoming tide.

Searchers, including the village public safety officer, launched a search for Pauk in a skiff, but didn't find him until about 6:15 a.m.

His body was recovered about 100 feet upstream from where he fell.

Pauk was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin were notified and his remains will be taken to the State Medical Examiner Office in Anchorage to be autopsied.

An investigation remains open, but troopers said they did not suspect foul play.
