2 rescued after fishing boat capsizes in Southeast Alaska

Two men appeared to be in good health after being rescued from a Southeast Alaska strait where their boat capsized during a fishing trip last week, Alaska State Troopers said.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers, the U.S. Forest Service and the National Marine Fisheries worked together to locate Joseph Hedlund, 57 of Petersburg, and Richard Shepson, 61 of Washington state, in the waters of Sumner Strait at about 3:29 p.m. Thursday, troopers wrote in an online dispatch. Neither of the men were wearing life jackets, troopers said.

According to troopers, Hedlund was signaling for help from the bow of the sunken boat, while Shepson was in the water.

The men were taken aboard the trooper vessel Moen. Both men were later reunited with their families in Petersburg.
