Police release name of worker killed when pipe trench collapsed

Anchorage police have identified the construction worker who died Tuesday when a trench collapsed as 23-year-old Samuel Morgan.

Anchorage Police Department Sgt. Mark Huelskoetter has said that a construction worker, later identified as Morgan, had been working on a sewer pipe in a trench that measured roughly 7 feet deep by 15 feet across when it collapsed and buried him.

Around 1 p.m. Tuesday, police, medics and a search-and-rescue team responded to the construction area in South Anchorage near 91st Avenue and King Street. Huelskoetter said co-workers got Morgan out of the trench but his injuries "were just too severe" and he died on scene.

Renee Oistad, Anchorage police spokeswoman, said Wednesday that police were investigating the accident with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
