Troopers: Talkeetna man accused of thefts from fire-destroyed properties

A Talkeetna man faces multiple charges after Alaska State Troopers said he stole items from two properties destroyed by the Sockeye fire earlier this week.

Troopers patrolling in the area said they received a report that copper wire had been stolen from a property at Mile 74 of the Parks Highway.

After following up on that report, troopers said, they found that a 30-year-old man, whom they did not identify, had taken copper wire and tubing from two structures destroyed by the fire -- the one reported on the Parks Highway and a second one on Polis Circle in Willow -- sometime between Wednesday and Thursday.

The items were worth between $400 and $500, troopers said.

The man faces two counts of first-degree criminal trespassing and third-degree theft, charges that are being forwarded to prosecutors, troopers said.

Correction: Troopers said Friday that charges mentioned in the case are being forwarded to prosecutors, but weren't formally filed as of Friday morning. This story has been updated to reflect this information.
