Mount Marathon documentary opens at Bear Tooth

Max Romey and Natalie Fedak winnowed more than 100 hours of footage down to 63 minutes to deliver their film -- "3022 ft.'' -- about the 2014 Mount Marathon race.

Romey, of Anchorage, and Fedak, a Coloradoan, met at Western Washington University, where Fedak graduated in 2014 with a degree in creative writing and Romey is pursuing a degree in cultural studies, film and entrepreneurship.

Romey brought a runner's perspective to the film – he finished fourth in the 5,000 meters this spring at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference track and field championships – and while making the film used running as his stress relief. Fedak furnished storytelling and an outsider's perspective.

"I think what we're going to present is a really polished snapshot, and whether you're from Alaska or Kentucky, you find out who these people are and what they're about,'' Romey said.

After working on the film for a year, Fedak said she's thrilled the movie's premiere has arrived.

"It's probably pretty much like a runner getting ready to race,'' Fedak said. "You know you'll get to the finish.''
