Alaska Baseball League: Chinooks, Goldpanners prevail in extra innings

Fans got more than they paid for Monday in the Alaska Baseball League, where two of the four games were decided in extra innings.

Chugiak beat the Anchorage Bucs 6-3 in 13 innings, the Fairbanks Goldpanners nipped the Seattle Studs 13-12 in 12 innings, the Anchorage Glacier Pilots beat the Mat-Su Miners 5-1 and the Everett (Wash.) Merchant edged the Peninsula Oilers 2-1.

The Chinooks extended their winning streak to seven games by erupting for three runs in the top of the 13th inning to beat the Bucs at Mulcahy Stadium.

Cameron Baranek belted a two-out, bases-loaded triple in the top of the 13th to help Chugiak (8-4 overall, 7-2 ABL) win its seventh straight game.

Travis Stone retired the Bucs in order in the bottom of the 13th to get the pitching victory.

The Bucs (4-7, 3-7) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the fourth, getting a two-run single from Brodie Leftridge for the early lead.

In Fairbanks, Evan Cassolato hit a one-out walkoff single in the 12th to lift the Goldpanners (4-5, 1-5) to their third straight win over the Studs.

The Pilots found a way to beat the Miners, racking up 10 hits at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

The top three batters in the order -- Luke Hamblin, Adalberto Carrillo and Jack Anderson -- combined for seven hits and four runs for the Pilots (4-7, 4-6), with Hamblin accounting for three hits and two runs. The Miners (10-3, 8-3) score their run in the fourth inning.

In Kenai, Everett scored two runs in the eighth to stop the Oilers (4-7, 4-4).

On Sunday at Growden Memorial Field in Fairbanks, the Goldpanners beat Seattle 7-4 in the annual Midnight Sun summer solstice game, which began at 10:30 p.m. and ended at 1 a.m. and was played without stadium lights.
