Young golfers rule at Alaska match-play championships

A pair of young golfers collected titles Sunday at the Alaska match play golf championships at Palmer Golf Course.

Shawn Yim, 24, took the men's title and Rynae Baca, who just finished her junior year at Southern Utah, won the women's crown.

Yim beat Adam Baxter in the finals 2 and 1. In the semifinals, Yim turned back Jim Ernst and Baxter beat Tim Ruf in the semifinals.

Yim lives in Georgia but lived in Fairbanks until he was 13 and still has family here. He is in Alaska for the summer, according to Jeremy Peters of the Alaska Golf Blog.

"He played college golf at Augusta State and roomed with Patrick Reed, the guy who is contending to win all the PGA Tour events most weeks," Peters said in an email. "He hits the ball so far, (he) says he plays his drives for a 320-yard carry. The average on the PGA Tour is about 290."

The women's final was a duel between Baca and her younger sister Madison. Tied after 18 holes, Rynae won it on the 19th hole.

In the semifinals, Rynae beat defending champion Rose Pelletier and Madison topped Jamie Berge.

The senior men's title went to Benjie Sumulong, who beat Bill Arnold 2 and 1.
