Coast Guard rescues 3 stranded boaters in Favorite Channel

JUNEAU -- The Coast Guard rescued three stranded boaters from a small island in Favorite Channel.

The Juneau Empire reports that the men called for help Friday morning after wind, rain and two-foot seas left them stranded on Bird Island, about 20 miles northwest of Juneau.

Station Juneau Coast Guardsmen responded and recovered them and their raft around 8:30 a.m. They took them to nearby Amalga Harbor.

Sector Juneau public affairs officer Lt. Jennifer Ferreira says the three men who were rescued had limited survival gear with them. They didn't have any camping gear, life jackets, flares or whistles and only a small amount of food, but they were able to start a fire.
