Volunteers build boxes for displaced sled dogs in Willow

FAIRBANKS -- A group of volunteers has come together to help out the many sled dogs displaced by the Sockeye Fire in Willow.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports about 25 volunteers gathered at the Ester Fire House over the weekend to help cut lumber and construct boxes to house the sled dogs.

University of Alaska Fairbanks student Stephanie Crawford launched the project and rounded up the volunteers through Facebook.

Crawford says she's only used $900 of the more than $3,000 she raised for the project. She plans to make more houses or supply bedding, posts and chains for mushers with the remainder.

Each box has been spray-painted with a salmon leaping out of flames to commemorate the Sockeye Fire. They are expected to ship to Willow in the next week.
