Early morning crash injures 1, disrupts power in Valley

A vehicle left the road and crashed into electrical wires outside Wasilla early Wednesday, sending the one person to the hospital and disrupting power to thousands of residents, according to Alaska State Troopers and Matanuska Electric Association

Troopers said they first received a report of the accident, near the intersection of West Hollywood and Vine Roads, at about 3:20 a.m. Wednesday. One occupant, 61-year-old Barbara Walter, was taken to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center to be treated for injuries. According to witnesses, three people fled the crash scene before officers arrived, troopers said.

In a Facebook post, MEA said the crash took two substations offline, disrupting power to about 5,900 of the coop's members. But within a few hours of the crash, the company said it had restored power to everyone affected. MEA estimated the damage to the electric wires at about $3,000, troopers said.

Troopers said the crash remains under investigation.
