A Haines man who shot a brown bear and three cubs that were getting into his trash last month will face misdemeanor charges despite reporting the event to authorities, Alaska Wildlife Troopers said.
Troopers said Kristopher Morden, 49, did not meet the requirements of state laws allowing game animals to be shot in defense of life or property because he did not properly dispose of the garbage.
"The regulations that outline the taking of game in defense of life or property prohibits a person from taking game if the necessity of the take was brought about by the improper disposal of garbage," troopers wrote in an online dispatch.
Morden shot the bears on June 17 during a closed season.
He faces three misdemeanor charges for taking a brown bear in a closed season and is to be arraigned Monday.
