Construction to close Seward Highway near Bird Creek intermittently

A stretch of the Seward Highway just south of Bird Creek will be closed to motorists 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through July for construction work, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.

The closure will span Mile 98.5 to Mile 100, said DOT spokesperson Jill Reese. Reese said the $9.8 million project will include a new northbound passing lane and drainage improvements, as well as updates to pavement, signs, striping and the guardrail.

"It's just part of our ever-going efforts to expand and make the Seward Highway a little bit better," she said.

Tuesday night marks the first scheduled closure of that portion of the highway from Anchorage to Seward. Reese said that from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, people can expect new traffic patterns with lane shifts, intermittent lane restrictions, flagging operations and short delays.

"We just want to make sure people know so they can plan their trips accordingly," Reese said.
