Police search for missing construction worker in Eagle River

Anchorage police are asking the public to help find a 38-year-old construction worker who disappeared from a work site in Eagle River Saturday morning.

Vasily Basargin was part of a construction crew working on a new house on the 18000 block of Upper McCrary Road. At about 10:15 a.m., Basargin told a co-worker he was going to get a drink and use the restroom, said Anchorage police spokesperson Renee Oistad.

About 20 minutes later, Basargin still hadn't come back. The co-worker went looking for him, including checking the bathroom, Oistad said. She said Basargin has not been seen since.

Basargin left his tool belt and cellphone behind and did not have a car, Oistad said. She described the area where the house was being built as quiet and heavily wooded.

Oistad said none of the other construction workers saw or heard anything unusual. Co-workers also told police Basargin was acting normally that day.

"It's just weird," Oistad said. "He's just ... gone."

Basargin was described by police as a Russian man, 5 feet, 10 inches tall and 200 pounds, balding, with brown hair and a long beard. He was last seen wearing a dark blue T-shirt, black work pants and brown work boots.

The Anchorage Police Department's search team has been called out to help look for Basargin. Anyone who knows of his whereabouts can call police dispatch at 907-786-8900, and press "0" to speak with an operator.
