Man who ran charity scam sentenced in Kenai

The founder of a Kenai Peninsula nonprofit that purported to use monetary donations to prepare and deliver care packages to troops overseas was sentenced to seven years in prison last week, the Peninsula Clarion reported.

Frank Roach was also ordered to pay $1,500 in fees and another $5,400 in restitution.

Roach was convicted earlier this year of nine counts of scheming to defraud and theft through his organization, Alaska Veteran Outreach Boxes for Heroes.

Roach established the organization in 2010 and raised more than $140,000 from April 2010 to October 2011. He used the funds as his main source of income and spent about $5,000 on the synthetic drug Spice and about $800 on the boxes, the Clarion said.

The newspaper reported Roach will be eligible for parole in four years.
