One dead, another injured after being struck by taxi in Southwest Alaska

Bristol Bay Borough police reported Saturday afternoon that an Anchorage man died and a Idaho man was injured in a vehicle accident on the Alaska Peninsula Highway.

On Saturday morning at 4:30 a.m. police responded to Mile 3 of the highway for a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian, police said in a statement.

An investigation found that 28-year-old King Salmon resident David Stichler was driving for Alaska Redline Taxi Co. when he struck two individuals, police said.

Zachary Krom, 25, of Anchorage was pronounced dead at the scene. Joshua Fullmer, a 34-year-old from Boise, Idaho, was medivacked to Anchorage for his injuries, police said.

The taxi driver has not been charged in the accident, a police spokesperson said. Stichler wasn't under the influence of alcohol, but the two individuals he hit were, he said.

Krom and Fullmer were on the highway, a 15-mile road that connects the Southwest communities of King Salmon and Naknek, according to the spokesperson. They were wearing dark clothing in rainy weather, he said.

The victims' families have been notified and the investigation into the accident is ongoing.
