Fairbanks man dies in Steese Highway crash

A 73-year-old man died in a vehicle collision on the Steese Highway Saturday night, the Fairbanks Police Department said in a statement Sunday.

At 9:26 p.m., William P. Ambrose of Fairbanks was driving a 2008 Ford Focus westbound on Third Street, turning south on the Steese Highway. Another driver in a Ford F-250 pickup driving south on the highway failed to stop at a red light, striking Ambrose's driver-side door, police said.

Ambrose was alive but unresponsive when the Fairbanks Fire Department arrived, according to the statement. He was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. There were no passengers in his car.

The driver of the pickup and a passenger were not injured in the crash, police said.
