Mangelsdorf, Shryock rack top-20s in U.S. mountain running

Two Alaska men posted top-20 finishes Saturday at the U.S. Mountain Running Championships on Mount Bachelor in Bend, Oregon.

Wylie Mangelsdorf of Palmer finished 14th and Matt Shryock of Anchorage took 17th.

Mangelsdorf, 23, clocked 51 minutes, 28 seconds, on the 12.3-kilometer course that included more than 2,200 feet of vertical climbing and an equal amount of descent. Mangelsdorf was coming off a 10th-place finish at Mount Marathon in Seward on the Fourth of July.

Shryock, 28, who was sixth at Mount Marathon, finished Saturday's race in 52:08. The race determined the six men and four women who will compete for the U.S. Mountain Running Team in the world championships in Wales in September.

Men's winner Patrick Smith of Salt Lake City, Utah, finished in 46:10.
