Juneau swimmer strikes gold at Special Olympics World Summer Games

Christine Quick was too quick for the competition Wednesday at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Quick, a 23-year-old from Juneau, grabbed the gold medal in the 50-meter backstroke with a time of 54.25 seconds.

She joins two other Alaskans who reaped medals Monday and Tuesday at the competition, which showcases 6,500 special-needs athletes from 165 countries.

Juneau swimmer C.J. Umbs has earned three medals -- gold, silver and bronze -- as has Kodiak powerlifter Brittany Tregarthen, whose haul includes one silver and two bronze medals. Wednesday, Umbs swam to fourth place in the 200 freestyle finals.

Four Alaskans are competing for the U.S. team at the Games. The fourth is golfer Garrett Stortz of Palmer, whose finals are Friday.
