Alaska High School Hall of Fame to induct 11 in Sunday ceremony

Nine people, three of them athletes, will join the Alaska High School Hall of Fame on Sunday.

Former NFL players Reggie Tongue of Lathrop and Chris Kuper of Dimond and NAIA All-American Jeremiah Richards of Palmer are among those who will be enshrined at a ceremony that begins at 5 p.m. at the Hilton Anchorage hotel.

The event is open to the public.

Tongue, Alaska's Player of the Year in 1990, and Kuper, the Cook Inlet Conference's lineman of the year in 2000, enjoyed long careers in the NFL.

Richards, the 1996 Player of the Year who also won state titles in the shot put (1997) and discus (1996) earned All-America status in both track and football at Benedictine College in Kansas.

Also being honored Sunday are six coaches -- Homer ski coach Dave Schroer, Point Hope basketball coach Rex Rock, Palmer and Colony wrestling coach Lancer Smith, West Valley and Eielson basketball coach Ted DeLeon, Noorvik basketball coach Mike Zibell and Sand Point and Seward basketball coach Roger Steinbrecher, who also coached football, volleyball and track.

Rounding out the Class of 2015 are two major contributors -- the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks and Alaska Airlines.

The Alaska High School Hall of Fame was created in 2006 by the Alaska School Activities Association. It honors students for their achievements in sports, academics and fine arts as well as coaches, administrators, advisors/directors, officials/adjudicators and major contributors.
