Recovery effort continues for missing Chena River swimmer

The Tanana Chiefs Conference Village Public Safety Officer agency took over recovery efforts Monday for a swimmer who went missing in the Chena River.

According to a joint press release from the agency and the city of Fairbanks, Tyler Cover, 30, and another man jumped into the river from a pedestrian bridge in downtown Fairbanks Sunday night. Cover attempted to swim to shore but was pulled into the center of the river just past the Cushman Street Bridge. The other man made it to shore.

The Fairbanks Fire Department and other agencies responded to assist in the search effort Sunday night. Tanana Chiefs Conference VPSOs resumed the effort at 10 a.m. Monday, when the search became a recovery operation.

The agency requests volunteers in the search effort, particularly those with boats, according to VPSO coordinator Jody Juneby-Potts. She also asks that boaters be aware of the recovery net crossing the full width of the river near the Carlson Center.
