Thieves steal truck from military family traveling to posting in Alaska

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — Possessions of an American family have been stolen in British Columbia before they made it to their new home in Alaska.

Police in Abbotsford say Anna Spencer and her five children were spending the night in the city after leaving their Georgia home to join Spencer's husband at a military base in Alaska.

Constable Ian MacDonald says thieves made off with Spencer's rented 26-foot U-Haul truck filled with belongings valued at about $100,000.

Surveillance video shows the vehicle parked in a hotel lot in the Fraser River valley, east of Vancouver, just after 3 a.m. Monday, about 20 minutes before it was driven away.

The stolen U-Haul was found in nearby Surrey early Wednesday, but MacDonald says many items were gone.
