Two Anaktuvuk Pass women accused of stealing post office money

Two women from the northern Alaska village of Anaktuvuk Pass have been charged with stealing deposits from the local post office, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

Dorothy Gordon and Bernice Hart were separately indicted by federal grand juries in Anchorage for multiple counts of misappropriation of postal funds, prosecutors said.

Gordon faces 23 charges stemming from the theft of deposits at Anaktuvuk Pass Post Office, as well as for allegedly stealing delivery funds. Those thefts total more than $70,000, prosecutors said.

Hart faces 45 charges, some of which stem from her allegedly pocketing money orders, prosecutors said. She is accused of stealing more than $40,000.

Anaktuvuk Pass is located in the central Brooks Range and is home to 375 Alaskans.

The charge of misappropriation of postal funds carries a possible five-year sentence.

First assistant U.S. attorney Kevin Feldis said the indictments are part of his office's ongoing effort to combat abuses of federal programs.
