Ammunition explodes as Anchorage Hillside home burns

A garage fire in an Anchorage Hillside home detonated stored ammunition Friday morning, bringing a big fire department response and prompting police to close Huffman Road from Elmore Road to Birch Road for about two hours.

Anchorage Fire Department spokesperson John See said the blaze was reported at 8:06 a.m. by the homeowner, who told dispatch his garage was on fire and ammunition he stored in a safe was exploding.

See said 21 fire units responded.

AFD Senior Capt. Tony Schwamm said about half the home was lost in the blaze. He said crews had the fire under control within about an hour and a half, but their job was complicated by a lack of hydrants in the area.

"We had to bring up 2,500-gallon portable tanks and had trucks bring additional water," Schwamm said.

An AFD fire investigator is working to determine the cause of the fire.

Huffman Road was reopened at about 10 a.m. See said no one was injured.
