Alaska grown

Farmers markets

There's a chill in the night air that signals this spectacular summer is on its way out. But here's a bright side -- farmers markets in full swing, with big crops of Alaska grown zucchini, fennel, celery, beets and carrots (which, as everyone knows, are the best carrots. They just are). Whether you're pickling, canning or just looking for something fresh for dinner, now's a great time to stop by. Held various times and locations each Saturday through fall. See Steve Edwards' Market Fresh column in the ADN Wednesdays for details.

Dance

Alaska Salsa Festival

Looking for an exciting way to spend your time indoors this winter and meet people? Learn salsa, bachata and cha-cha dancing at the Alaska Salsa Festival. There will be workshops, showcases, banquets, performances and themed dance parties. Dance champs will be in Anchorage to show how it's done. Continues through Sunday, Hotel Captain Cook, 939 W. Fifth Ave. Party only pass, $110; boot camp only pass, $120; full pass, $190. (336-0333, alaskasalsafestival.com)

Garden

Plastic garden pot recycling

If you're into gardening, you may have some used plastic pots, cell packs and trays on your hands. Put them to good use by sending them off to be recycled or reused. Separate into two groups: No. 2 and all the rest. Pots will be baled and shipped to markets in Seattle by WestRock's Anchorage Recycling Center and turned into new plastic products. Stack like-sized pots to save space. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Alaska Botanical Garden. Free. (644-7968, alparalaska.com)
