Fast company and perfect conditions turned Saturday's Lost Lake Run into one of the fastest in the 24-year history of the popular trail run near Seward.
Matt Shryock ran the second fastest men's time in history, Najeeby Quinn ran the fastest women's time since 2000 and for the first time in history six men finished the 15.75-mile race in less than 1 hour, 40 minutes.
"I knew it would be a fast race," Shryock said. "When a lot of fast guys get together it's bound to be fast, and records have been falling this year left and right."
Shryock finished in 1:35:33 in his Lost Lake debut, 17 seconds shy of the course record 1:35:16 set in 2011 by Jerry Ross.
The two men behind Shryock ran times that rank in the top five all-time. Jacob Kirk placed second in 1:36:23, the third best time ever, and Scott Patterson was third in 1:37:09, the fifth best time ever.
"It was pretty awesome out here today," said Ross, who was on hand as a spectator. "I think the competitiveness helps fuel it. It was really something."
The loaded men's field included most of Southcentral Alaska's top mountain and trail runners. Among those who broke 1:40 were Jim Shine (1:38:16), Matias Saari (1:38:41) and Eric Strabel (1:39:47).
Lost Lake, a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis, is hugely popular and typically reaches capacity hours after registration opens in April. It was something of a perfect storm that so many top runners managed to enter in a year that delivered ideal race-day conditions.
"Competition played a big part in it, for sure," said Saari, who at age 44 shaved about 30 seconds off his previous best. "This is a hard race to get into so it hasn't generally had a stacked field, but when you get eight or 10 of these guys together, anything can happen."
In the women's division, Quinn led a group of three who cracked the two-hour mark.
Quinn captured her third Lost Lake crown with a personal-best 1:53:46, a time that took about four minutes off her previous best. She was followed by Christy Marvin (1:56:01) and Denali Strabel (1:59:21).
"I didn't have a perfect race but I had a damn-near perfect race," Quinn said.
Quinn's time was the fastest by a woman since 2000, when Kristi Waythomas won in 1:51:10. The course record belongs to Chris Clark, who clocked 1:49:15 in 1999, the year before she raced the marathon at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
"I'm super happy. You never know how you're doing with your training till you get in a race," Quinn said. "This is the first time I've ever beat Christy and it may never happen again, so I'm going to celebrate."
The Lost Lake trail, which follows a service trail in Chugach National Forest, is known for its gorgeous scenery. The race begins at the Primrose Campground at Mile 18.5 of the Seward Highway and ends at the Bear Creek Fire Department at Mile 5.5, reaching a peak elevation of 2,100 feet.
It consists of three almost evenly divided sections – an uphill portion, a rolling, sometimes flat portion and a downhill.
Despite a downpour Friday in Seward, Saturday brought sunshine and warm weather. The footing was pretty good throughout, Quinn said.
"You couldn't ask for better race conditions," she said. "There was wind at the top but there's always a little wind at Lost Lake. The footing was great. There was a little mud but I like a little mud."
A field of 734 finished, and is the case with many of Alaska's mountain and trail runs, pain was involved.
For Quinn, pain came at the end, in part because she attacked the downhill hard after agreeing with Marvin to go at a conservative pace at the start of the race.
"From mile 11.5 to 14.5 is four miles of downhill running," she said. "It pounds. It hurts your back, it makes your side ache, it's really tough.
"I tried to run the downhill faster than I guess I have. I thought I'd make up a little time because we went out so conservative."
For Shryock, pain came at the beginning when Patterson, the winner of last month's Crow Pass Crossing, set a torrid pace on the ascent.
"Scott laid down a really fast pace and my legs were screaming," he said. "I told myself before 'Don't go out hard' but of course I can't help myself. I kind of marked Scott going up the hill but he was so strong he dropped me.
"I thought I could maybe catch him on the rolling middle section and that's what happened."
The rolling portion played to Shryock's strengths. This is his first full summer in Alaska and while he has become a force in mountain running – he placed sixth in Mount Marathon – he said he performs best on rolling terrain.
That makes him a good fit for the two races that bookend the summer – Turnagain Arm and Lost Lake. Shyrock, 28, won both of those races.
"I'm somewhere between a road runner and a mountain runner," he said. "This race and Turnagain Arm fall right in my wheelhouse."
While the rolling terrain benefited Shryock, the downhill catapulted Kirk, another race rookie, into second place.
Kirk, 22, recently wrapped up his college career at Montana State and this summer has established himself as someone to watch. He placed third in June's Mayor's Marathon and impressed the veterans Saturday.
"He had a helluva run," Saari said. "He chased down Scott (Patterson) and Jim (Shine) on the downhill and he ran away from me at the top. Watch out for that guy."
