Early snowfall forecast for Alaska's Brooks Range

A slow-moving storm will likely dump snow and drop temperatures over the central and eastern Brooks Range starting Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service.

"It's definitely an early-season storm. Temperatures will drop sharply," said Bob Fischer, Fairbanks-based lead forecaster for the weather service. "So it's not going to be too pleasant for hunters and others involved in outdoor activities."

The weather service released a special weather statement Monday evening that advised those planning trips to the area this week to "make appropriate preparations."

Fischer said high temperatures in the lower elevations of the mountains Tuesday will likely hover in the low 50s. Temperatures will cool to the 40s at night, he said. But Wednesday night, temperatures will sink to the low to mid-30s and remain there Thursday, he said.

Snow is expected to fall over the Brooks Range east of Howard Pass, the weather statement said. Fischer said snow will fall on elevations above 1,000 feet.
