Anchorage mayor appoints new GM for city electric utility

Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz has appointed Mark Johnston as general manager for Municipal Light and Power, the city-owned electric utility. Johnston, who had been serving as the utility's acting general manager since July, was previously ML&P's chief financial officer.

Johnston, who has worked on the Alaska Public Utilities Commission (the predecessor of the Regulator Commission of Alaska), Alaska Railroad Corp. and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, has been a certified public accountant in Alaska since 1996.

ML&P serves about 31,000 residential customers, as well as businesses in Anchorage's downtown core and port.
