DeLoach leaps into long jump finals at world track and field championships

Janay DeLoach, the Eielson High graduate who earned a bronze medal in the long jump at the 2012 Summer Olympics, will vie for another medal Friday at the world track and field championships in Beijing.

DeLoach was among 12 women who qualified for the finals during Wednesday's preliminary competition.

She advanced with a jump of 21 feet, 11 inches -- the 11th-best jump of the day. Leading the group of qualifiers was Serbia's Ivana Spanovic, who sailed 22-8.

Joining DeLoach in the finals is one other American, Tianna Bartoletta, who qualified with a jump of 22-0.25.

Deloach, who lives in Fort Collins, Colorado, is one of two former high school stars from Alaska who competed in Beijing. Bartlett High grad Jordan Clarke finished 13th in the men's shot put.
