Many Anchorage state offices to close early Monday for presidential visit

A few state offices in downtown Anchorage will close at 1 p.m. Monday, with officials expecting "traffic and general disruption" during President Barack Obama's visit and the GLACIER conference.

Various street closures have been announced for downtown Anchorage. On Friday, Sheldon Fisher, commissioner of the Department of Administration, sent out a notice to state employees that listed offices slated for an early Monday closure.

Here are the offices:

  • Atwood Building – Seventh Avenue and F Street
  • Linny Pacillo Parking Garage, which includes the downtown Division of Motor Vehicles office —Seventh Avenue and F Street
  • Health and Social Services, Senior Services -- Eighth Avenue and F Street
  • The Office of Public Advocacy and Public Defense — Fifth Avenue and I Street
  • Brady Building — Fourth Avenue and L Street
  • Carr-Gottstein Building —Third Avenue and K Street
  • Labor — Sixth Avenue and K Street

Fisher said employees were expected to work until 1 p.m. Monday, then leave any time after that.

"The buildings themselves will not be closed, but because of the traffic and possible street closures, they may be hard to access," Fisher wrote. "You are welcome to continue working in your offices after 1 p.m. if you choose to."

Fisher directed closed offices to announce the closure on their websites, leave signage on public-facing doors and leave messages on voicemail recordings.

He also said that state workers in buildings not on the list are expected to work a full day.

City officials said earlier this week that Anchorage City Hall will also be closed at 1 p.m. Monday. Meanwhile, the Nesbett and Boney courthouses in Anchorage will be closed to trials and non-emergency hearings for the duration of the GLACIER conference, starting Monday and ending at noon on Wednesday.

The street closures mostly affect the area immediately surrounding the Dena'ina Center on Monday, and in the area around the Hotel Captain Cook from Monday through Wednesday.
