Gellert's swift time for West highlights big cross-country meet at Bartlett

The takeaway from Saturday's Bartlett State Preview cross-country meet is pretty simple:

Watch out for West and Chugiak this season.

The two Cook Inlet Conference schools enjoyed all kinds of success on the running trails that will host the state championships in October. In a field of more than 700 runners representing 25 schools from across Alaska, the Eagles and the Mustangs stood out.

West dominated the boys team competition and got a blazing effort from sophomore Molly Gellert, who won the girls 5-kilometer race to help the Eagles finish second in the girls team standings.

Chugiak earned a decisive win in the girls team competition and got a thrilling individual victory from Ty Jordan, who beat Service's Gus Schumacher by five seconds to boost the Mustangs to a fourth-place team finish among boys.

Gellert, a sophomore, had the race of the day. She won the 3.1-mile race in 18 minutes, 42.3 seconds, one of the fastest girls' times recorded in recent years on the Bartlett trails, where sub-19:00 times by girls are special.

Her time eclipsed the second-place times from the last two Class 4A state meets, although it's well off the course-record 17:06 set last season by Kenai's Allie Ostrander and the 17:49 Ostrander ran at the 2013 state championships.

Gellert's time bettered Ostrander's 18:46 at the 2012 championships and was three seconds off Lathrop runner Megan Edic's winning time at the 2011 championships.

Gellert won by 24 seconds over South's Morgan Lash (19:06). Third place went to Glennallen's Briahna Gerlach (19:22), who has won the last two Class 1-2-3A state titles with sub-19:00 times.

Leading the way for the Chugiak girls was fifth-place Emma Sees (19:28). KayLee Manwaring placed 11th (19:56) and Hannah Booher was 12th (19:56) for the Mustangs, who scored 64 team points. West was second with 92 team points.

The West boys scored 73 points to breeze past second-place South, which finished with 107.

Three boys cracked the 16-minute mark. Jordan set the pace in 15:42, followed by Schumacher (15:48) and Finn Walker of West (15:58).

Walker was West's only runner in the top 10, but four placed in the top 20.
