West scores late for first flag football win over Dimond

West 18, Dimond 14

The West Eagles scored the winning touchdown with about 90 seconds left Saturday to claim their first flag football win over Cook Inlet Conference power Dimond.

Kyana Cornejo rushed 12 yards for the winning score in West's 18-14 triumph at Dimond Alumni Field.

"It was a big win," West coach Travis Cantrell said. "There was a good crowd. It was nice."

With time winding down, Isabella Roberts put West in scoring position with runs of 3, 24 and 25 yards.

Cornejo's run up the middle put the Eagles in the end zone, and then the defense took over to hold Dimond in the final seconds.

"Our defense did outstanding," Cantrell said.

Maya Baquiran finished with 11 flag pulls, Roberts came up with 10 and Mailee Baquiran added six for the Eagles.

West grabbed a 12-0 halftime lead behind touchdown passes by Rebecca Syrup, who hit Allysa Brown with a 12-yard pass and found Roberts with a 10-yarder.

Dimond seized a 14-12 lead in the second half on Megan Luther's 4-yard touchdown run and Heaven Thompson's 13-yard pass to Elizabeth Goodrun.

Luther finished with 77 yards on 17 carries and Tiffany Jackson added 58 yards on 13 carries for the Lynx. Goodrun caught four passes for 48 yards.

Defensively, Dimond got a boost from Victoria Johansen's eight pulls and D'Ahvionn Rabb's interception and three pulls.

Chugiak 13, South 7

Alexis Trombley's second touchdown pass of the game lifted Chugiak to a 13-7 win Saturday in a CIC flag football game at Anchorage Football Stadium.

Trombley led the Mustangs with 135 passing yards. She only completed four of 14 attempts, but two completions were for touchdowns.

Trombley connected with Cerina Bush for a 78-yard touchdown that gave Chugiak a 7-0 lead.

South answered to make it 7-7 at the half. Trombley came up with the game-winner in the third quarter with a 49-yard scoring strike to Carson Head.

Bailey Rogers and Lilly Perham led the Chugiak defense with six and five flag pulls, respectively.

East 39, Bartlett 14

Sandin Kidder launched four touchdown passes to propel East past Bartlett 39-14 in a CIC flag football game Saturday at Bartlett.

Two of Kidder's scoring passes went to Alexis Joubert. Sierra Rosenzweig and Octavia Harris caught one apiece.

Grace Wiggins added a rushing touchdown for the T-birds, who got a spark on defense from Abby Johnson (5 pulls) and Rosenzweig (interception).

Service 26, Eagle River 6

Service quarterback Julia Miknich racked up 196 passing yards and threw for three touchdowns Saturday in Eagle River, powering the Cougars' 26-6 CIC flag football win over Eagle River.

Miknich completed 16 of 21 passes and connected with three receivers for touchdowns – Kyla Pearce, Courtney LaPointe and Alex Parran.

Tavie Parker aided the Cougars' causes by rushing for 85 yards and one touchdown on six carries. Pearce added five pulls on defense, and Carolyn Kinze came through with an interception.
