Tattoo

Traditional patterns

Tattoo artist Maya Sialuk Jacobsen, from Greenland, will make several appearances and hold workshops in Anchorage this week. In one of the events open to the public, she'll be joined by Alaska artist Holly Mititquq Nordlum in a talk about traditional tattooing, its revival in the Inuit world and its relevance to the current generation at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Anchorage Museum. The talk is part of the museum's Urban Intervention Series of the Polar Lab program. Jacobsen will also give a demonstration from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Above the Rest Tattoo, 916 Ingra St.

Art

Poems and pictures

Described as "a conversation in poems and pictures," an exhibit titled "Sparks" opens with a reception at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, at the Alaska Humanities Forum, 161 E. First Ave., Door 15. The "conversations" involve poet Peggy Shumaker, who wrote a poem at the request of artist Kes Woodward. He painted a picture in response to the poem and she wrote another poem in response to the picture and so on. Shumaker and Woodward will present an artist talk during the reception, starting at 6:30 p.m. The show remains on display through Oct. 6.

Design

Professional critiques

Nationally known designer Marc English will present a lecture at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Cyrano's, 413 D St. Keep in mind that English's lectures are more like what you'd get if you crossed a revival preacher with a Vegas showman with a supremely dedicated art professor. The talk will encompass inspiration, application, theory and practice in the design industry. Budding designers can sign up for his critique workshop at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Anchorage Community Works, 349 E. Ship Creek Ave. Space is limited. Get tickets at alaska.aiga.org.
